Chartreuse is a French herbal liqueur made by Carthusian monks at the Grande Chartreuse monastery near Grenoble, from a closely guarded recipe reportedly blending around 130 herbs, plants, and flowers. It comes in two main styles: green Chartreuse, higher-proof and more herbaceous, and yellow Chartreuse, lower-proof, milder, and more citrus-forward. It is traditionally drunk as a digestif on its own or on ice, and is also used in cocktails such as the Last Word and the Chartreuse Swizzle, where its intense herbal character balances sweeter or citrus ingredients.
