Chocolate frosting is a sweet, spreadable topping made by beating together butter, powdered sugar, and melted or unsweetened chocolate or cocoa powder, sometimes with milk or cream to adjust consistency. It differs from chocolate ganache, which is just chocolate and cream with no added butter or powdered sugar, and from chocolate glaze, which is thin enough to pour rather than spread. It is the standard topping for American layer cakes and cupcakes, and pairs well with vanilla, espresso, nuts, and a touch of sea salt.
