Chocolate milk is a beverage made by mixing milk with cocoa powder or chocolate syrup and sugar. Chocolate itself reached Europe from Mesoamerica in the 1500s, but chocolate milk as a mixed drink developed later, after cocoa powder became widely available in the 1800s. It is served chilled or warm and is also used as a base for milkshakes or as a liquid in some baked goods. It should not be confused with hot chocolate, which is typically made with melted chocolate or a richer cocoa mixture and served as a dedicated hot drink rather than flavored milk.
