Peppadew is a trademarked variety of sweet piquanté pepper: small, round, and bright red, with a sweet-and-tangy flavor, a mild bite, and a crunchy texture, most often sold pickled in jars. It was discovered in 1993 by South African farmer Johan Steenkamp, who found an unusual pepper bush growing in his holiday home's garden in the Eastern Cape; botanists later confirmed it as a distinct pepper variety, and Steenkamp propagated it on contract farms near Tzaneen in Limpopo province, where most of the crop is still grown. The peppers are picked ripe, then pickled in a vinegar, sugar, and water brine that gives them their characteristic sweet-sour crunch. They're commonly stuffed with soft cheese, diced into salads and dips, or used as a garnish on charcuterie boards and sandwiches.
