French Onion Soup Recipe

Ingredients

• 1 tbsp butter
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 4 large onions (about 1 1/2 pounds), thinly sliced
• 2-4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
• 1 tsp sugar
• 1/2 tsp dried thyme
• 2 tbsp flour
• 1/2 cup dry white wine
• 8 cups chicken or beef broth
• 2 tbsp brandy (optional)
• 6-8 thick slices French bread, toasted
• 1 garlic clove
• 12 ounces of Swiss cheese, grated
