• 1⁄2 cup dark rum or brandy, plus more for feeding
• 1⁄3 cup unsalted butter, softened
• 3⁄4 cup firmly packed demerara sugar
• 4 eggs
• 1⁄2 cup molasses
• 1 1⁄2 cups all-purpose flour
• 3⁄4 tsp baking powder
• 1 tsp ground ginger
• 1⁄4 tsp ground nutmeg
• 1⁄2 tsp all spice
• 1⁄2 cup ground almonds
• 1 cup whole almonds
