- ½ cup whole wheat flour (spooned into measuring cup and leveled-off)
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon baking soda
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons caraway seeds
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup buttermilk ((see note))
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted and cooled slightly)
- 1⅓ cups currants
- 1½ tablespoons turbinado or sparkling white sugar, (for topping)
