• 2 tbsp (30 mL) unsalted butter
• 1 tsp (5 mL) granulated sugar
• 4 cups (1 L) beef broth
• 1 clove garlic, minced
• 1/2 tsp (2 mL) dried thyme
• 1/4 tsp (1 mL) freshly ground black pepper
• pinch salt
• 4 slices French bread
• 1 1/4 cups (300 mL) shredded smoked Cheddar cheese (about 4 oz/125 g)
