Ingredients

  • *FOR CRUST*
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup shortening (plus 2 tablespoons, Crisco)
  • 4 to 6 tablespoons water (cold water, start off with 1 tablespoon, and add as needed
  • milk, for top of crust before baking)
  • *FOR PIE FILLING*
  • 1/3 to 1/2 cup granulated sugar (depending on the tartness of the apples)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 3 pounds apples (peeled and sliced thin, 8 cups, I use Macintosh or Granny Smith, 8 apples)
  • 3 tablespoons butter (chopped into small pieces)
