• 1 cup yellow onion, chopped
• 1 pound extra-lean ground beef
• 4 cups frozen shredded hash brown potatoes (see note)
• Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
• 1 cup shredded extra-sharp cheddar cheese, or more to taste
• Burger condiments, optional, to taste
