Sandwich loaves were popular party foods in the 1940s and '50s. This updated version combines earthy mushrooms and pistachios with baked ham and fresh asparagus.
Ingredients

- 2 tbsp. canola oil
- 8-10 large button mushrooms
- 1 unsliced whole wheat bread loaf
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 6 (4"×1/2″×1/2″) lengths baked ham
- <sup>1</sup>⁄<sub>3</sub> cup shelled pistachios
- 2 (8-oz.) packages cream cheese, softened
- <sup>1</sup>⁄<sub>2</sub> cup heavy cream
