• 1 cup dried fruit (such as raisins, currants, sultanas, glacé cherries, and cranberries)
• 1 large apple, grated
• ¾ cup walnuts, chopped
• 3 cups plain flour
• 1 tsp mixed spice
• 1 tsp ground nutmeg
• 1 tsp ground ginger
• 1 pinch salt
• 1 cup sugar
• ½ cup butter
• 3 large eggs, beaten
• 1 tbsp golden syrup or treacle
• 1 tbsp brandy (for soaking)
