A coq au vin is a classic French stew in which chicken is braised slowly in red wine and a little brandy to yield a supremely rich sauce filled with tender meat, crisp bits of bacon, mushrooms and burnished pearl onions Traditional recipes call for a whole cut-up chicken, but using all dark meat gives you a particularly succulent dish without the risk of overcooked white meat However, if you would rather substitute a whole cut-up bird, just add the breasts in the last 30 minutes of simmering

If you loathe gefilte fish, that staple of the Seder, it may just be that you've never had it homemade In this recipe, created to convert gefilte fish skeptics, the traditional patties are updated with more flavorful fish, and then poached in court-bouillon — that is, a light vegetable broth Be sure to use a wide pot here; the patties rise to the top as they cook, and you want to give them enough space.

Ivy Mix, an owner of Leyenda, a Brooklyn bar with a focus on Latin spirits, thinks this drink requires an earthy lowland tequila (that is, grown in the valley section of Jalisco), such at the Partida reposado, which is aged slightly, and has toasty, nutty flavors For its tonic match, she reaches for Canada Dry or Schweppes, which have “more quinine kick” in her opinion For a switch, try this recipe with mezcal

Hoagie rolls baked with slices of turkey and provolone cheese and a mushroom/onion saute mixture, then topped with olives, tomato and lettuce. This is a favorite meal with my family. I make it using the turkey and cheese from our local grocery store deli. Note: If desired, spread mustard and mayonnaise on top half of bread before completing sandwich.
