Beer Cheese

Dishes & Recipes

Beer cheese is a creamy, spreadable dip made by blending sharp cheddar cheese with beer and seasonings such as garlic, mustard, and cayenne.

It was created in the 1930s by Joe Allman for his cousin Johnny Allman's Driftwood Inn near Boonesborough, Kentucky, as a salty, spicy snack meant to keep patrons drinking. Clark County, Kentucky was officially recognized as its birthplace in 2013, and Winchester has held an annual Beer Cheese Festival since 2009.

It's typically served with crackers, pretzels, or vegetables for dipping, and also works as a topping for burgers and baked potatoes or a filling for grilled cheese. Recipes vary in spice level and in the type of beer and cheese used.
