Bunny Chow

Dishes & Recipes

Bunny chow is a South African fast food dish from Durban, made of a hollowed-out portion of a white bread loaf filled with curry, typically meat, chickpea (chana), or lentil-based. It originated with the Indian community in Natal (now KwaZulu-Natal), likely as a portable lunch for indentured laborers; the name's origin is debated, with one common theory tracing it to "bania," a term for Gujarati merchants. It's eaten by hand, tearing off pieces of bread to scoop up the curry, and remains a staple of Durban street food and informal eateries known as "bunny joints."
