A commercial chocolate-hazelnut spread made by the Italian company Ferrero. It grew out of a chocolate-hazelnut paste created in Piedmont, Italy, in the 1940s during a cocoa shortage, and was reformulated and launched under the Nutella name in 1964. Its main ingredients are sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, and skimmed milk powder, with hazelnuts sourced largely from Turkey, the world's leading hazelnut producer. Beyond spreading on toast, crepes, and waffles, it is used as a filling for pastries and a topping for ice cream and other desserts.
