Juicy Lucy

Dishes & Recipes

The Juicy Lucy, also known as a Jucy Lucy or Stuffed Cheeseburger, is a hamburger variant that originates from the Twin Cities region of Minnesota. It is distinguished by having cheese stuffed inside the meat patty, rather than placed on top.

The exact origins of the Juicy Lucy are disputed, with both Matt's Bar and the 5-8 Club in Minneapolis claiming to have invented the dish in the 1950s. According to legend, the name "Juicy Lucy" was coined when a customer burned the roof of their mouth on the molten cheese oozing from the center of the burger.

To prepare a Juicy Lucy, a thin beef patty is formed and a pocket is created in the center. Cheese, typically American or cheddar, is placed inside the pocket before the patty is sealed and cooked. When done, the cheese melts and becomes encased within the burger, creating a molten cheese-filled center. This unique construction results in a burger that is crisp on the outside but deliciously gooey on the inside.

Juicy Lucys are most commonly served on a standard hamburger bun, though some establishments offer variations on the bread. Common accompaniments include french fries, coleslaw, and pickles. While the traditional Juicy Lucy features a single beef patty, some restaurants offer double-decker versions with two patties and extra cheese.

Beyond the classic American cheese filling, Juicy Lucys can be found with a variety of cheese options, including cheddar, Swiss, pepper jack, and even blue cheese. Some eateries also experiment with non-traditional fillings, such as bacon, mushrooms, or even jalapeños for a spicy twist.

The Juicy Lucy has become a beloved regional specialty, with passionate debates among locals over which Minneapolis establishment serves the definitive version. The dish has also gained national attention, with the Travel Channel's Man v. Food host Adam Richman famously visiting Matt's Bar and the 5-8 Club to sample their takes on the Juicy Lucy.

While the Juicy Lucy is primarily associated with the Twin Cities, the concept of a cheese-stuffed burger has been adopted by restaurants across the United States. However, the original Minneapolis-style Juicy Lucy, with its molten cheese center and crisp exterior, remains the quintessential version of this unique and indulgent burger.
