Ingredients: 1 cup chopped dates; 1 cup boiling water; 1 teaspoon bicarb; 1 cup castor sugar; ¼ cup butter; 1 egg; 1 teaspoon vanilla; 1 ½ cups sifted flour; 1 teaspoon b.powder; Pinch salt; Cream butter and sugar...add egg and vanilla and beat well...sift dry ingred and add to above...add date mixture...pour into greased pan..bake @180 for +-45 minutes...; 5 tablespoons fresh cream; 5 tablespoons brown sugar; 2 tablespoons butter; sprinkle nuts or dust icing sugar
