• 2 (32 oz) containers chicken or vegetable stock
• 1 1/2 tbsp pepper
• salt, to taste
• 1 quart water
• 1 medium onion, diced
• 2 stalks celery, diced
• 1 large carrot, diced
• 1 large ham slice, diced (or a ham bone)
