Ingredients

• 1¾ cups all-purpose flour, spooned into measuring cup and leveled off
• ½ cup whole wheat flour, spooned into measuring cup and leveled off
• 2 teaspoons baking powder
• ¼ teaspoon baking soda
• ¾ teaspoon salt
• ⅓ cup granulated sugar
• 2 teaspoons caraway seeds
• 1 large egg
• 1 cup buttermilk (see note)
• 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
• 1⅓ cups currants
• 1½ tablespoons turbinado or sparkling white sugar, for topping
