• 1 medium white onion, finely chopped
• 2 15-ounce cans of crushed tomatoes
• 1 15-ounce can tomato sauce
• 1/4 cup tomato paste, preferably from a tube
• 1 teaspoon sugar
• 1 teaspoon dried oregano
• 1 teaspoon dried basil
• pinch of red pepper flake
• salt and pepper to taste
