Mary's Homemade Buttermilk Hush Puppies

Ingredients

• 1½ cups cornmeal (I use fine/medium or stone ground yellow cornmeal)
• ¾ cup all-purpose flour
• 1 to 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (to taste)
• ¼ teaspoon baking soda
• ¼ teaspoon Cajun or Creole seasoning ( My favorite is Slap Yo Mama )
• ¼ teaspoon salt
• ⅛ teaspoon black pepper
• 1½ cups buttermilk
• 1 large egg
• 3 tablespoons grated onion
• Peanut or canola oil for frying
