• 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced
• 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
• 1 lb boneless beef chuck, cut into 1-inch cubes
• 3 cups water
• 1 medium stalk celery, chopped
• 1 small onion, chopped
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 dried bay leaf
• 1/2 cup cold water
• 2 tablespoons flour
• ½ tsp salt
• ½ tsp pepper
