Coconut Shavings
Coconut shavings, also called coconut flakes or coconut chips, are thin, dried slices or shreds of coconut meat (the coconut's flesh, or endosperm).
The coconut palm is native to the Indo-Pacific region and spread to other tropical coastal areas through trade; today Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Brazil, and Mexico are among the leading producers.
Coconut shavings are used across Southeast Asian, Indian, and Caribbean cooking for texture, flavor, and richness: in curries, rice dishes, desserts, and snacks in Southeast Asia; in curries, chutneys, and sweets in India; and in coconut-based sauces, rice and peas, and baked goods in the Caribbean. They are often toasted or fried first to bring out a nutty, slightly sweet flavor and crisp texture.
They pair well with tropical fruits like pineapple and mango, warm spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger, and in savory dishes with chicken, seafood, and aromatic herbs.
