Coconut Yogurt
Coconut yogurt is a plant-based, dairy-free alternative to dairy yogurt, made by fermenting coconut meat and milk with live active cultures, the same way dairy yogurt is cultured.
Coconut yogurt has roots in the traditional cooking of tropical coconut-growing regions and has become widely available commercially in recent years, produced from coconuts grown mainly in the Philippines, Indonesia, India, Brazil, and Pacific island nations.
It is used as a dairy-free base in smoothies, breakfast bowls, and desserts, and as a base for marinades, dips, and sauces in Southeast Asian, Indian, and Middle Eastern cuisines.
Its flavor is mild and slightly sweet with a distinct coconut aroma, and a tangy, slightly acidic finish similar to dairy yogurt. It pairs well with tropical fruits like mango and pineapple, berries, and nuts and granola in sweet dishes, and can balance spicy or acidic flavors in Indian curries or Middle Eastern mezze.
