Salad Spinner

Equipment & Tools

A perforated basket that sits inside a bowl and is spun by a crank, pull cord or pump lid, flinging rinsed salad greens against the basket wall while the water collects in the bowl below. Dry leaves matter: dressing slides off wet lettuce and pools at the bottom, and wet greens wilt and rot in the refrigerator within a day. Spun dry and wrapped in a towel they keep for several days.

The basket doubles as a colander for washing the greens first, and the bowl serves the salad. The spinner also dries herbs before chopping, berries before storing and blanched vegetables before freezing. A clean pillowcase swung outdoors is the old alternative.
