Sweet rolls are individual portions of rich, enriched yeast dough made with butter, eggs, and often milk or cream, shaped into spirals, knots, or rolls and filled with sweet fillings such as cinnamon sugar, fruit preserves, nuts, or chocolate. They are related to, but distinct from, Danish pastry: Danish dough is laminated with butter in thin layers like croissant dough, giving a flaky texture, while sweet roll dough is simply enriched and kneaded, giving a soft, tender crumb rather than flaky layers. Familiar examples include American cinnamon rolls and sticky buns, Scandinavian wienerbrød, and German Schnecken. Sweet rolls are eaten for breakfast or dessert, plain, iced, or dusted with powdered sugar; the same dough can be made into savory versions filled with cheese or herbs.
