• 1 cup dates, pitted and coarsely chopped
• 1 cup water
• 1 1/4 cups flour
• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• 1/2 teaspoon ginger
• 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
• 1/4 teaspoon cloves
• 1 stick butter, plus extra for greasing
• 3/4 cup dark brown sugar
• 2 eggs
• 3 tablespoons molasses
• Zest of half an orange
• For the sticky toffee sauce:
• 1 stick unsalted butter
• 1 cup dark brown sugar
• 1 cup heavy cream
• 1 cup heavy cream, whipped
