- 1 medium yellow onion, diced
- 3 or 4 bay leaves
- 5 or 6 juniper berries
- 4 or 5 whole cloves
- ½ cup sweet white wine or water
- Salt
- Freshly ground black pepper
- 6 bratwurst
- 1 (12-ounce) bottle lager or weizen beer (optional)
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (if pan-frying)
- Mustard, for serving
