• 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, plus more for pan
• 3 eggs, separated
• 1/4 cup shortening
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
• 1 cup flour
• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/2 cup buttermilk
• 3/4 cup half-and-half
• 6 tablespoons light corn syrup
• 1/4 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
• 2 egg yolks
• 3 tablespoons cornstarch
• 1 tablespoon butter
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 3/4 cup toasted pecans, for sprinkling on top
