• 4 slices thick cut bacon, cut into 1/2-inch pieces

• 1-1/2 cups diced Italian bread, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
• 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
• 1 medium head romaine lettuce (about 8 cups torn)
• Pinch of salt
• 2 to 4 tablespoons chopped sweet onion (see notes)
• 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
• 1 tablespoon water
