Ingredients

• 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
• 1 medium onion, chopped
• 4 cloves garlic, chopped
• 2 lbs ripe tomatoes, peeled and chopped
• Salt and pepper, to taste
• 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil leaves
• 1 loaf of stale bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
• 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth
