Apple Corer

Equipment & Tools

A hand tool that removes the seeds and tough core from a whole apple or pear in one push, leaving the fruit intact. The common form is a hollow metal cylinder with a serrated or sharpened rim on a handle: it is centred over the stem end, driven through the fruit and pulled back out with the core inside. Wedge-style corers combine the cylinder with radiating blades so a single press both cores and slices the fruit.

Corers are used for baked apples, stuffed fruit and quick slicing for pies and tarts. Coring a fruit from one end with a paring knife works but leaves a ragged cavity; the corer gives a clean, even hole that holds a filling.
