Connect Recipe Saint to ChatGPT

This guide walks you through connecting Recipe Saint to ChatGPT, step by step, written for non-technical users. It takes about three minutes.

Once connected, you can ask ChatGPT things like:

"Find a make-ahead brunch menu on Recipe Saint and build me a shopping list for eight people."

...and it will search, save, and build lists in your Recipe Saint account.

Before you start

You'll need:

  • A paid ChatGPT plan - custom plugins require Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Edu. (The free ChatGPT plan can't add them - if that's you, Claude's free plan can.)
  • The web app - set this up at chatgpt.com in a browser. Once added, the plugin works on your other devices too.
  • A Recipe Saint account - register here if you don't have one (it's free).

Step 1: Open Plugins

  1. Open chatgpt.com and sign in.
  2. Click Plugins in the left sidebar (or go straight to chatgpt.com/plugins).

Don't look for this under Settings. Settings > Plugins only lists plugins you've already installed and has no way to add a new one - its Browse directory button just brings you to the same Plugins page as the sidebar link.

Step 2: Add Recipe Saint

  1. Click Add (top right) and choose Create MCP App.
  2. Fill in the form:
    • Name: Recipe Saint
    • Description: optional - leave it blank or write "Recipes, menus and shopping lists".
    • Connection: leave Server URL selected and paste:
https://www.recipesaint.com/api/mcp
  • Authentication: OAuth (ChatGPT usually fills this in by itself). Leave Advanced OAuth settings alone.
  1. Tick I understand and want to continue. ChatGPT shows this warning for every custom plugin, not just Recipe Saint.
  2. Click Create.

Step 3: Sign in and approve

  1. ChatGPT sends you to a Recipe Saint page. Sign in with your normal Recipe Saint account if asked.
  2. A consent screen lists exactly what ChatGPT will be allowed to do - searching recipes, managing your saved recipes, shopping lists, and menus, each spelled out.
  3. Click Connect.

You're returned to ChatGPT with the plugin active.

Step 4: Try it

Start a new chat, type @, pick Recipe Saint, and ask:

  • "Search Recipe Saint for weeknight pasta and show me the top 3."
  • "Save your favorite and put its ingredients on a new shopping list."

Anything ChatGPT writes into your account shows up in Recipe Management, and recipes it creates carry a badge with its name so they're always distinguishable from yours.

A note on write actions

ChatGPT asks you to confirm before a plugin changes anything (saving a recipe, adding to a list). That's normal and a good safety habit - approve the action and it proceeds.

Troubleshooting

I don't see Create MCP App. Use the Add button on the Plugins page from the left sidebar, not the Plugins section in Settings. It's only on paid plans, in the web app at chatgpt.com. On a Business or Enterprise workspace, an admin may need to allow custom plugins first.

I got a blank page or an error during sign-in. Go back to ChatGPT and try connecting once more. If it keeps failing, contact us.

ChatGPT says it can't see any Recipe Saint tools. Start a new chat and pick Recipe Saint with @ before asking. If it still isn't listed, check the plugin under Plugins > Personal.

I want to disconnect. Remove the plugin from the Plugins page. Access stops immediately; your Recipe Saint account is untouched.
