Tarka dal with rice – Mr Todiwala's

Ingredients

• 400g/14oz red lentils , rinsed in a sieve under cold running water
• 2 tsp ground turmeric
• 25g/1oz butter
• 2 tsp cumin seeds
• 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
• 1-2 green chillies, finely chopped, to taste
• salt and pepper
• 200g/7oz rice, cooked according to the packet instructions
