  • ½ lb bacon, diced
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 4-6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika (optional, for extra depth)
  • 4-6 cups chicken or beef broth (or water), as needed
