- 140 g pitted dates, dried
- 80 ml vegetable oil, chopped into small pieces
- 70 g black treacle, plus extra for greasing
- 1 tsp fresh ginger
- 1 large egg, grated
- 180 ml buttermilk
- 250 g plain flour
- 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
- 1 tbsp ground ginger
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- 50 g dark muscovado sugar
