Ingredients
- Whole Wheat Pastry Crust
- 2 1/4 cups white whole wheat flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter 2 sticks
- 1/2 cup ice water
- Filling
- 3 medium tart apples
- Vanilla Glaze
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 2-3 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- Preheat oven to 375
- In a food processor, pulse the flour and salt to mix. Add the cold butter and pulse until a fine crumb forms. Add water while mixing until a dough appears and it comes away from the sides.
- Form dough into a ball and place in refrigerator for 10 minutes while you prepare your baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Once dough is chilled, turn out onto lightly floured surface and roll a rectangle about 1/4 inch thin. Using a knife, cut the dough into rectangles in desired size.
- Pile the apple slices into the square (about 1/2 inch thick) and cover with another square of dough, sealing the edges with a fork.
- Place the pop tarts on a parchment-lined baking sheet and pierce the tops a few times with the fork to let them vent. Bake at 375 on the middle rack for about 20-25 minutes until they start to brown.
