• 2 vanilla beans, halved lengthwise
• 2 tablespoons (30 ml) butter
• 2 tablespoons (30 ml) olive oil
• 4 cups (1 litre) milk
• 1 bay leaf
• 1 teaspoon (5 ml) fennel seeds
