• 1 cup all purpose flour

• 1/2 teaspoons salt
• 1/4 cup butter or margarine, softened
• 3/4 cup granulated sugar
• 2 eggs
• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
• 1/2 cup buttermilk
• 3/4 teaspoons baking soda
• 1 tablespoon red icing color
• 1/2 tablespoon white vinegar
• 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
• 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter softened
• 1 teaspoon clear vanilla extract
• 3 cups powdered sugar
• 1-2 tablespoon milk (depending on the consistency you prefer, medium or thin)
