• 1 to 2 pounds cube steak or round tenderized round steak
• 1 pint buttermilk
• 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
• 1 pinch salt
• 1 pinch black pepper
• 1/8 teaspoon baking soda
• 1 egg
• 1/2 cup milk
• 1 cup all purpose flour
• Vegetable shortening, lard, or vegetable oil, for frying
