• 2 28-ounce cans tomatoes**
• 1 tablespoon dried basil
• 1 tablespoon dried oregano
• 2 teaspoons dried thyme
• 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
• 1/4 cup Parmesano Reggiano cheese
• 8–10 fresh basil leaves
• additional leaves for decorating
• Meatballs
• 1 pound ground chuck
• 1 cup breadcrumbs
• 1/4 cup Parmesano Reggiano cheese, grated
• 3/4 cup tomato sauce, see above
• 2–3 tablespoons olive oil
