• 1 pint strawberries
• 1 cup solid vegetable shortening
• 3 cups granulated sugar
• 5 large eggs (at room temperature)
• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
• 1 cup buttermilk (at room temperature)
• 3 cups all-purpose flour (sifted (do not use self-rising flour))
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1 teaspoon strawberry extract
• 4 - 5 drops red food coloring (*if desired)
