- 1/4 small sweet or red onion, thinly sliced
- 1/4 C red wine vinegar
- 4 thick slices crusty sourdough bread
- 1 garlic clove, halved
- softened butter, as needed
- 1 large ripe tomato, sliced
- 1 can sardines (6-7 oz)
- 1/4 C sliced green olives
- extra-virgin olive oil
- fresh lemon juice, to taste
- flaky salt and pepper, to taste
- fresh herbs, for garnish
