  • 2 quartss water
  • 4 large carrots , peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1.5 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons beef bouillon granules
  • 1 teaspoon dried marjoram
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 2 bays leaves
  • 0.13 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 0.13 teaspoons ground black pepper
  • 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour , sifted
  • 0.25 cups yellow cornmeal
  • 2 teaspoons white sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.25 teaspoons dried sage , crumbled
  • 0.25 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
