Ingredients

• 3 cans Great Northern or cannellini beans
• 12 garlic cloves
• 1 bay leaf
• 3 or 4 meaty lamb shanks, cut in half by your butcher
• 1 tablespoon crushed fresh rosemary
• 2 teaspoons salt
• 5 tablespoons unsalted butter
• 6 tablespoons olive oil
• Freshly ground pepper, to taste
• 1 cup J. Rickards Malbec, plus more as needed
• 1 1/2 cups beef broth
• 2 large onions, thinly sliced
• 6 thick-cut bacon slices
• 2/3 cup dried bread crumbs
